The Rolex Daytona is justifiably one of the most desirable Rolexes ever made, seen on every wrist from Paul Newman to Michael Jordan. This stunning example is a modern Cosmograph Daytona ref.116250. Made of Rolex’s proprietary 904L stainless steel. The chronograph sub-dials are set off from the striking white dial with silver tone guilloche protected by a flat sapphire crystal. The fixed tachymeter engraved bezel that highlights the case is a tribute to the watch’s auto racing heritage. Screw-down pushers on the chronograph functions ensure oyster-level water resistance to 100 m. This watch has a stainless steel Rolex Oyster bracelet with deployment flip-lock clasp.
A brief look at the history of the Rolex Daytona
The watch that would become the Daytona started in 1963 as the Cosmograph, Ref 6239. Named for the space craze, it didn’t quite take off until the following year when the Daytona styling was introduced to commemorate Rolex’s sponsorship of the 24 Hours of Daytona race in Florida. The contrasting subdials and engraved tachymeter bezel recall the dashboard of a racecar and give the watch a strong, sporty look. But the early Daytonas required manual winding, which limited their appeal.
Rolex introduced a self-winding Daytona in 1988. They enlarged the case from 37 to 40 mm and the metal markers were given luminous inlays.
