Frequently Asked Questions

How to find your perfect vintage watch with Palisade Jewelers

Palisade pioneered the pre-owned watch market and over the years, we have become a premiere and trusted resource for collectors and first-time buyers alike. Whatever you’re looking for, come in and talk with us. We have a broad network of friends in the business and may come across the watch you’ve been waiting for.

What makes a watch “vintage”?

If a watch is at least 20 years old, it is going to be labeled “vintage” whether it's pre-owned or never worn. The vintage market has roots in the watch trading business, where watch shops would give you trade-in credit on your existing watch toward a new purchase. Pawn stores also acquire watches through trade or pawn loans that are not redeemed. We’ve been acquiring fine watches this way since 1947.

What makes a watch collectible?

What makes a watch collectible is almost as varied as the number of wrists on the planet. Maybe you prize a rare complication, or a special model or limited edition. Some collectors look for watches with a connection to history, where the prior ownership adds value – in which case, they're paying more for history than for horology. And sometimes it’s about style. Just like classic cars, some watch models have a look that make them perpetual favorites.

How do I learn more about a watch I want?

There are so many brands and styles, it’s nearly impossible to know everything, so one thing that helps is narrowing your scope. Find a specific maker, a specific watch or a particular style of watch that interests you. Then really get to know it: read up and study pictures of the specific markers of the style: the dial, the bezel, the lug ends, the numbers or batons, the crown and case. You might also want to start looking online at what's on the market and what reasonable price ranges look like. There is no official 'blue book' of watch values, although a new app hopes to become that authority. Meanwhile there’s no substitute for educating yourself and trusting your retailer.

Can I buy from you on eBay?

Yes! At Palisade Jewelry on eBay we value the positive feedback we get from customers. Because we’ve had a brick-and-mortar location nearly 70 years, reputation means everything to us, and that’s good news for our purchasers. For customers who can’t get to Englewood, eBay is a great resource, and we also welcome your calls. If you see a watch and want to know more, call us to talk about it.
