As with any purchase as significant as a luxury watch, the more you know, the better decision you’ll make. That starts with knowing and trusting your dealer and knowing more than a bit about Swiss watches.

Just what makes a watch “Swiss”?

The designation “Swiss” encompasses differing levels of meaning that make a big difference in the value of the watch. “Swiss Made” means the movement of the watch was made, encased and inspected in Switzerland, and that at least half of the parts were also manufactured, fitted together and inspected in Switzerland. Don’t confuse this with “Swiss Movement” which means the movement was made in Switzerland, but some or all of the rest of the watch was not. ETA, which is owned by Swatch, produces the majority the movements in Switzerland and sells to many manufacturers in Switzerland and around the world.

Why now is a great time to buy a Rolex or fine Swiss watch

As noted in this study by Deloitte, there’s a brief glut of inventory brought on by changes in the market in Asia and other world-wide factors. In recent years, Rolex and other high end Swiss watch makers ramped up production to meet the surge in emerging markets, but with recent political changes and economic indicators pointing toward a decrease in demand, they are reducing production projections for 2017. That means that right now there’s a lot of inventory in recent Rolex models, including the Milgauss and DateJust styles, and a pressure to sell them before new models hit the market.

So where should you buy a used Rolex?

Regardless of your dream watch, you will want to get a fair price and shop in a safe environment. A luxury Swiss watch is a complex purchase, or it should be. That means getting offline and into the real world. There may be a few trusted online sources, but there’s no substitute for a dealer with a physical location, and longevity in the business. We’ve been buying and selling used Rolexes and other fine vintage watches since 1947 and while our eBay store extends our reach, it’s the day to day contact with customers that makes us one of the most trusted sources in the area, with a very loyal customer following.

In addition to trusting your watch dealer, seeing and experiencing the watch in person allows you to inspect it, try it on and discuss the timepiece with an expert. Our immense knowledge of the brands allows us to help you discern the hallmarks of a fake or “frankenwatch.” Not only will you have greater confidence in your purchase, you’ll also get to know your watch and its special distinctions. This is part of the pleasure of owning a fine Swiss watch. If you’re near us, stop in for a chat. When you are ready for a great Rolex or other fine vintage watch, come in and talk dials, crowns, movements and models. There’s nothing we enjoy more.
